Rediscovered Treasures: The Parker Poe Collection at 40

Main Floor Galleries
On View Jan 22 – May 22, 2026
Opening Reception: Friday, February 20 | 5:30-7:30pm

Forty years ago, Parker Poe helped establish what is now Thomasville Center for the Arts, an organization that would become a cornerstone of the city’s cultural life. Upon his death in 1991, Poe bequeathed his entire art collection to the institution, creating the beginning of its permanent collection. More than a collector, Poe was a patron of artists, cultivating enduring friendships that shaped his eclectic eye. Among his closest connections was British painter Graham Sutherland, one of the most distinctive British artists of the 20th century.

This exhibition invites visitors to rediscover the depth and diversity of Poe’s vision and some of the artists he championed. Visitors will encounter the precise etchings of Richard Bishop; the hypnotic geometry of Victor Vasarely, the father of Op Art; the expressive landscapes and street scenes of Ogden Pleissner; and the innovative works of Walter Stein and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. From Audubon’s life-sized birds to Karl Zerbe’s expressive works, each piece reflects Poe’s care, curiosity, and unwavering support for artists.

While only a portion of the collection is on view to mark this 40th anniversary milestone, the entire Parker Poe Collection has been digitized, making it accessible to the public online and extending Poe’s legacy far beyond the gallery walls. Today, the collection remains a vivid testament to his adventurous taste, his artistic friendships, and his unwavering commitment to the cultural life of Thomasville and Thomasville Center for the Arts.

Rediscovered Treasures has been guest curated by Amanda Karioth Thompson.
